STOP THE PRESS!
MAJOR CHANGES PROPOSED IN MICHIGAN LEGISLATURE FOR BECOMING A LICERNSED CONTRACTOR!
Senate Bill #632 has recently been introduced in the Michigan Senate. The bill proposes stricter educational requirements for obtaining your Michigan Residential License as well as continuing education after you become licensed. Here are the highlights from Bill #632.
- Applicants for a license will be required to take a 60 hour prelicensure course.
- After obtaining your license, contractors will be required to complete 3 hours of continuing education each year and 21 hours between each license renewal.
If Bill #632 becomes law, obtaining your license would require more than a week of your time to attend a prelicense course as well as continuing education to maintain your license.
Now is the time to obtain your license!
While the outcome of Bill #632 has yet to be decided, obtaining your license now will grand father you in and exempt you from the prelicensure course requirement. It is uncertain whether you would have to meet the continuing education requirement. Now is the time to act. Begin preparing now to pass the exam and obtain your Michigan Residential Builder License.

Our team of instructors has been actively researching the new topics and writing questions to cover the new changes to the builders exam. Here are some of the discrepancies they have uncovered. The Candidate Information Bulletin suggests several resources to prepare for the exam. Two of the suggested study resources are:
- Michigan Residential Code
- Carpentry & Building Construction by McGraw-Hill
Listed below are some examples of conflicting information between these two books.
How far apart should weep holes be?
According to the Michigan Builders Code the answer is 33 inches on center and 3/16" inches in diameter; however, the Carpentry & Building Construction book says 18 - 24" inches. Which one is correct?
Here is another example.
What is the maximum riser permitted for stairs?
The Michigan Builders Code says the maximum riser height is 8 inches. Carpentry & Building Construction says the maximum riser height is 7 inches. Which book are you to believe? More importantly, what is the correct answer on the test?
These are just a few examples of the discrepancies between the books suggested by the State for the exam. Save yourself countless hours of reading and having to guess what the correct answer really is. Our builders exam test preparation software has reduced all of the suggested study material into one compact study course. Best of all, you won't have to guess which answer is correct, because the correct answer has been provided for you.
